So far the last although i hope not installment of Palin's travels around the world and timely considering the world spotlight on Brazil first for the World Cup and soon the Olympics... it's a country in transition with a great many problems... although what country isn't i reckon... some more than others or more obvious i guess.Loved it like all Michael's works... he goes places i'll never see and brings them back to you and me.

This rather epic eight disc set consist of Michael Palin reading the book of his TV series trip through Brazil. Given its length it’s probably best reserved either for very long drives and consumed in chunks. My copy included basically zero in the way of booklet etc but at least the packaging did a reasonably good job of protecting this multi-disc set which can be a bit of a bug-bear with these sorts of releases.
The trip itself can probably be fairly described as one of the lesser lights of the mans catalogue. It is perhaps telling that he’s not done another since then, instead doing other work that has included speaking tours. Issues with the Brazil trip were that it was effectively just a tour with no real defined start and end point and no overall purpose other than to just travel about Brazil. And the simple march of time and its effects on our presenter.
Despite this the dulcet tones of Palin are a welcome addition for most and Brazil certainly has a lustre all of its own. Our intrepid former Python scurries about regaling us of stories of great coastal cities, failed industrial plants, fortunes made and then lost, fabulous food and stunning scenery. He moves from the coast to the inland delights and the gets its time in the sun. The journey – with attendant detours inland, roughly moves in a north to south direction and Palins understated humour and his love of actually engaging with his subject rather than just looking at it is a great boon.
While this may not have been one of the highlights of his travelogues this CD edition is a very useful purchase for those who find themselves with the time to listen to it – or the long country drives which will soak it up – and it also makes the perfect gift for anyone in your inner circle who is a fan of the mans travels.

Unusual angles in each location, with interesting characters. Each description makes one
want to experience that particular area of Brazil. Still reading it and hoping it will not end.
If you're into Michael Palin's travel shows you'll love this book. Excellent companion to the TV series. Great photos. If you want to take an imaginary vacation without leaving your home you can do it with this book. Very informative on Brazil and their culture. Loved it. Ty
AN EXCELLENT BOOK THAT MAKES YOU FEEL PART OF THE BRAZIL EXPEDITION WHILST EXPERIENCING FIRST HAND THE COUNTRY AND IT'S CULTURE. WELL RESEARCHED AND WRITTEN MICHAEL. I WILL LOOK FOREARD TO GOING TO BRAZIL AT SOME STAGE FOR HOLIDAYS.
I have read every single travel book of Michael Palin. This book ranks among his best well written as usual, informative, insightful, compassionate and a marvelous sense of self-deprecating humor. A wonderful read and summary of the great physical, ethnic and cultural diversities of Brazil. I have been to Brazil three times, and this book brought me insights that I was not aware of. I look forward to more of Palin's books
